Supporting Winchburgh Community Projects with enhanced security

After a theft disrupted the Winchburgh Community Growing Group and Builders Den project, we introduced the Safer POD® S1 to improve security with 24/7 monitoring.

Background

A community growing and skills project in Winchburgh, West Lothian, was disrupted after a theft of essential materials.

The theft threatened to halt activities run by the Winchburgh Community Growing Group and Builders Den. These initiatives support local wellbeing, skills development, and encourage social connection.

Support from Lovell, who are amid a notable construction project within Winchburgh, and supply chain partners led to the rapid restoration of material goods which would ensure activities were able to continue.

Safer Group ensured the project had an actively monitored security solution capable of deterring and detecting further crime.

Goal

The primary objective of our involvement was to help restore operations quickly after the theft.

An essential component of this was providing confidence to those who use the community space and take part in the projects that are found there.

Implementing an enhanced security solution would play a vital role in delivering this confidence while protecting the space from any potential future criminal interest.

Who are the groups we supported?

The Winchburgh Community Growing Group is a volunteer-led initiative focused on community gardening, food growth and sustainability. Builders Den are a project set up by the Winchburgh Community Development Trust, intending to act as a social space for men to tackle isolation and build practical skills like building, fixing and making goods.

Challenges

Having suffered a notable break-in, the site was considered newly vulnerable. Community projects like those found in Winchburgh largely operate in open or partially secured spaces, which can make them targets to opportunistic theft.

As a trending crime, tool theft has received increased press attention. The high value and portability of devices have led to them becoming highly desired by criminals.

Without a security infrastructure in place and the potential for equipment to be stored on site, vulnerable windows of exposure can be created and exploited.

The deployment of our solution had to be efficient enough to avoid disruption on the projects, which continued thanks to the replacement of stolen tools and equipment by Lovell partners.

The rapid deployment capability of our chosen solution meant that it could be live on the project within minutes.

Solution

When we heard about the theft that threatened to disrupt the vital work of the Winchburgh Community Growing Group and Builders Den, we knew we had to help.

Together, we joined Lovell Partnerships and an alliance of their supply chain partners in contributing a donation of more than £10,000 worth of equipment which included tools, generators, and our Safer POD® S1 security solution.

The Safer POD® S1 solution enhanced security on site by reinforcing visible deterrence and capturing live footage of the site.

We’re proud to support the Winchburgh Community Growing Group and Builders Den in their efforts to deter future theft. We know the difference initiatives like these make to close-knit communities across the country, and we’re committed to helping them continue to flourish.

Ryan Clark

Safer Group Chief Executive

The Safer POD® S1 is an autonomous, modular and state-of-the-art intruder detection device which captures FHD footage in real time, which is reviewed 24/7 by the Safer Group monitoring team.

Within this deployment, the Safer POD® S1 provided:

  • A strong visual deterrence to prevent further intrusion, theft, and ASB.

  • Monitoring of all activities on site, allowing for the proactive identification of potential threats

  • Protection for the new valuable materials utilised by community groups

Protection for the newly introduced materials stored on site would provide peace of mind to those who use the projects, essential in the mission to minimise disruption to the community and foster greater resilience after the theft.

Results

The support of Lovell’s supply chain partners to replace stole equipment allowed community programmes to resume quickly with minimal disruption.

The enhanced security provided by our Safer POD® S1 solution, would further reduce the risk of repeated incidents and improve feelings of safety and wellbeing amongst those who spend time in this community space.

The donation allowed the passionate volunteers of these projects to continue progressing their vital work. Growing food, building skills, and bringing people together.

The theft could have been a real setback. Instead, we’ve seen first-hand what’s possible when organisations and local businesses step up to help...the garden and Builders Den are already thriving again, and it just shows the true strength of our community.
