Background

Safer Group provides security solutions for both newly build Aldi stores and existing stores undergoing construction works. A new Aldi store was under construction by DMV Groundworks Ltd.

Highly visible to the public, the proposed store was situated near public footpaths and roads with multiple points of access and egress to the compound area.

DMV Groundworks Ltd approached us to provide a security solution that would be capable of protecting the ongoing site from theft, intrusion, and other risks.

Goal

With an understanding of the various risk factors that can affect ongoing works in the construction industry, our objective for this deployment was to provide a site security solution capable of deterring any illegal activity on site while avoiding unnecessary disruption to day-to-day operations.

What risk factors affect construction sites?

Construction sites carry significant risk due to their open layouts. Weekends or seasonal holidays, during which sites may be unoccupied completely, also contribute to this vulnerability. The major risk factors attached to construction sites are asset theft, intrusion, vandalism and anti-social behaviour. All of these carry the potential for financial and reputational damage.

Challenges

Data showed high levels of theft and malicious activity within the postcode area where the store was being constructed. Upon the completion of a site survey, our construction security specialist determined that the project would be taking place in an area of high risk, vulnerable to potential attempts on intrusion.

Unwanted intruders who gain access to the construction site may intend to commit theft of plant, materials, or other assets like tools and fuel. They may also wish to cause damage or commit acts of anti-social behaviour.

With the site environment expected to remain dynamic and evolving as the project progressed, there was a need to implement a solution that could be easily moved. The site further contained a variety of assets, including a fuel bowser, generator, site offices, material laydown area, and high-value materials.

The site further contained a plant and materials laydown area comprising four elevations. Office cabins and welfare units were also exposed.

Solution

To best protect the plant and materials laydown area, our construction security specialist recommended deploying a combination of two Safer POD® S1 solutions to cover the plant and materials laydown area in addition to a further Safer POD® S1 solution deployed to cover the cabins, welfare and fuel areas.

The Safer POD® S1 security solution is an autonomous, modular intruder detection device which captures FHD footage in real time. The highly visible nature of the device created a strong visual deterrence against threats that could affect this site, like intrusion, theft, and anti-social behaviour.

In addition to the POD® S1 solutions deployed, a Safer Scout was also introduced to cover the site offices, cabins, and fuel bowser.

The Safer Scout is deployed as a secondary companion device to the Safer POD® S1, extending your security coverage. With a rapidly deployable sleek design, the Scout is equipped with a 270° detection zone capable of capturing HDR images with a 30-meter detection range and 15-meter night vision.

Safer Scout

A compact companion to our Safer POD® S1/X1, the Scout extends your coverage with deterrence and detection for smaller sites.

  • 270° detection zone
  • Rapidly deployable, sleek design
  • Zero emission operation
  • Flood, smoke, and CO₂ detection
Safer Scout

The site was monitored live 24/7 by the Safer Group monitoring team in our control room. This deployment also utilised an all-inclusive alarm response with keyholding, enabling a security officer to attend the site in the event of an alarm activation no matter the time of day.

Results

With the Safer POD® S1 and Safer Scout solutions deployed, a visible and proactive security presence was created which deterred potential criminal activity.

At the time of writing, no incidents have been captured on the project throughout the deployment. This serves to reinforce the effectiveness of the visual deterrent created by the Safer POD® S1 and Safer Scout solutions, alongside the proactive monitoring measures in place.

Given the data collected pre-deployment, which identified an elevated risk of theft and malicious activity within the postcode area, the absence of incidents represented a particularly successful outcome.

By blending both the Safer POD® S1 and Safer Scout solutions, the deployment provided comprehensive coverage of the full compound area, which covered 50x30 meters and included key site assets such as plant equipment, materials, alongside office and welfare units.

The ability to protect the site throughout its various stages was further strengthened by the rapidly deployable, manual handling compliant nature of our Safer POD® S1 and Safer Scout solutions. Any changes to the site coverage requirements could therefore be addressed swiftly and with zero disruption to operations on site.
