The Safer summary

Through collaborations with major UK retailers, constabularies, and BID groups, our Safer Group technology has delivered proven reductions in violence and ASB for retailers:

42% reduction in anti-social behaviour (ASB) recorded during a retail deployment in partnership with Warwickshire Constabulary.

71% reduction in overall reported crime over a two-month period during a retail deployment with Northumbria Police.

81% of shoppers surveyed during a major supermarket partner deployment with Warwickshire Constabulary reported feeling significantly safer in store due to the visible presence of a Safer POD®.

£322,500+ in estimated police and Home Office cost-of-crime savings generated across combined police and retail partner deployments by preventing incidents proactively.

Retail decisionmakers are more aware than ever of the daily conversation surrounding security. Retail threats have expanded beyond shoplifting and shrinkage. Workplace safety, staff retention, and reducing operational disruption are key considerations for retailers. Behind daily operational challenges lies the escalating threat of verbal abuse, physical violence, intimidation, and anti-social behaviour.

When a retail shop security strategy focuses narrowly on traditional guarding or passive monitoring, it can prove ineffective against these growing concerns. In our experience, retail spaces are protected effectively by rapidly deployed, autonomous security devices that actively deter aggressive behaviour.

What threats should retailers be aware of?

Verbal abuse and physical violence affect retail spaces, shopworkers and store managers alike. When asking how retailers can stop threats like verbal abuse and violence in stores, we should first consider the data:

The human cost of retail crime cannot be ignored. Those on the front line often must deal with the consequences. We hear from retailers about incidents of intimidation, violent disorder, and verbal or physical threats that all leave staff feeling increasingly vulnerable. A stronger security presence can help to deter these incidents while returning confidence to staff.

Aggressive anti-social behaviour, when unchecked, can make retail environments hostile. Store teams step away from customer service to manage incidents, entrances become flashpoints, and customer footfall drops. Traditional static guards are increasingly encouraged not to intervene in incidents of aggressive behaviour, which can dangerously escalate into confrontation.

How are retailers directly affected by this kind of crime?

Workplace fear can directly drive staff turnover and absenteeism. Replacing store colleagues and management teams incurs heavy recruitment, training, and temp-agency costs, all whilst increasing pressure on remaining team members.

Furthermore, frequent confrontations, visible anti-social behaviour, and persistent loitering all damage the customer experience. Shoppers eventually begin to avoid stores where they feel unsafe, directly impacting footfall and the reputation of brands.

When store teams become fatigued, incident logging can decline. This creates reporting blind spots for leadership while leaving store staff feeling unsupported.

How can our Safer POD® solutions prevent retail crimes?

Solving new, dynamic threats to staff safety can demand growth beyond traditional, reactive security models.

We have worked with forward-thinking retail leaders, constabularies, and BID groups across the UK to introduce our autonomous, rapidly deployable risk mitigation technologies to high-risk retail settings.

Where traditional CCTV is often a passive, hidden form of evidence gathering, solutions like our Safer POD® S1/X1, favoured in the retail space, function by creating an unmistakable visual and audio presence which disrupts offender intent, increases self-awareness of behaviour, and deters anti-social conduct before it escalates.

Our Safer POD solutions change the dynamic instantly. The burden of direct confrontation by shop workers is removed with a highly visible deterrent positioned right at the point of entry or high-risk target area. The Safer POD solution makes offenders immediately aware that they are being watched in real time, preventing incidents before they have a chance to escalate.

Our autonomous Safer PODs can be set up in minutes and can disrupt incidents whether in a shopping centre, car park, or shop floor. Safer POD® solutions are also scalable if hotspots shift and come with additional features that retailers often lean on, such as secondary devices, flood, fire, and smoke detection.

Our crime prevention and risk specialists work with retailers to place the deterrents directly within high-risk locations, eliminating operational blind spots and creating an immediate visual signal to potential offenders.

Safer POD® S1/X1

State-of-the-art intruder detection. Modular and rapidly deployable, this compact device is ideal for smaller deployments.

  • 360° detection zone
  • Battery and solar for full autonomy
  • Anti-masking sensors
  • Dynamic luminance for enhanced visual deterrence (X1 only).

Operation Short Circuit: How did we achieve a 93% reduction in incidents?

Through Operation Short Circuit, Durham Constabulary partnered with Safer Group to deploy autonomous Safer POD® S1 towers across over 16 of Darlington's highest-risk retail hotspots.

Guided by police crime mapping, our eye-level visual deterrent disrupted criminal activity before it reached store entrances. This led to a 93% reduction in violence and public order incidents across high-risk locations. Our proactive approach dramatically reduced store confrontations, protected shopworkers, and afforded the constabulary over £311,000 in estimated Home Office cost-of-crime savings.

The impact of these devices was phenomenal during the trial, and undoubtedly improved confidence among retailers and shopworkers, who are often victims of crime themselves due to abuse, violence and threats to their safety in-store.

Protect your staff, store, and shoppers

As incidents of violence, abuse, and ASB continue to threaten retailers, an effective retail security strategy can no longer rely on reactive measures. Threats to staff and customer wellbeing alongside the operational deficiencies this type of crime can cause all demand a better solution.

By combining crime data, hotspot analysis, and an autonomous visual deterrent, our solution has been proven to help retailers disrupt aggressive behaviour before it escalates, remove staff from the direct line of conflict and create an environment in which store teams can thrive, and customers can feel secure.
